In a recent survey over one thousand people were asked the question:
Do you like your job?
Less than 30% of respondents said they enjoyed their job. Regretfully there are other sobering statistics:
- More than 50% of all college graduates are not working in their field of study
- An individual entering the workforce will on average have over 10 different jobs and almost 5 different careers
It is no wonder that business owners complain about employees not being focused, surfing on the Internet, coming in late, leaving early, extending lunch hours, performing shoddy work, etc. The explanationfor this is simple. If you do not enjoy what you do, it will more often than not translate into mediocre job performance. For some, money is oftentimes an incentive, but a temporary one at best as its ability to motivate eventually wears off over time. Undoubtedly, the prevalence of job dissatisfaction has resulted in many people mechanically going through the motions of life in an effort to make a living, instead of actually making a life.
Our current educational system, in essence, is designed to only teach people how to obtain that proverbial "good job." Recent statistics indicate that 95% of the population will work for over 45 years but will still not be financially independent when they retire. This is the sad eventuality of the world’s plan for our lives and unfortunately, it is a plan designed for people to just merely exist. On the contrary, God’s wonderful plan for each of our lives far transcends just existing. His sovereign plan is for each of us to fulfill the calling on our lives so that we may live an abundant life.
